Research Programs

Engagement through key programs

Our mission is to improve the translation of innovative research into clinical practice.  To achieve this, TRI provides world-class research facilities; links to clinicians and clinical trial facilities and expertise; links to industry, government and other funding bodies; and an education and training program aimed at producing a skilled workforce for the translational pathway.  A core element of this support and service offering are our research programs run by our dedicated Engagement Team.

Flagship Program

TRI's Translation Pathways Program

The Translation Pathways Program is one of TRI’s flagship educational offerings. Working in partnership with Bright Arena and CSIRO’s ON Program, TRI offers training workshops, Translation Fellowships and ad hoc coaching to complement the commercialisation training and services provided by our partner institutes.

This program helps researchers identify and develop their value propositions and supports new collaborations and increased access to non-traditional funding sources. TRI’s goal is to foster research impact and ultimately to fast-track the journey from discovery to bedside.

Creating connections within the TRI ecosystem

TRI’s suite of bespoke engagement programs helps to connect medical researchers at TRI with clinicians, consumers and industry.

Scientists with Clinicians

  • Leading Innovations through New Collaborations (LINC) Grants – Grants of up to $50,000 for new collaborative partnerships between early to mid-career clinicians and early to mid-career TRI-based researchers.
  • PARF/TRI Microgrants – Seed funding of up to $3000 for new short-term research projects between MSH (Novice, early & mid-career) clinicians and TRI-based researchers.
  • Researcher & Clinician Networking events – TRI runs targeted networking events for its partner clinicians and TRI-based researchers to discuss research/clinical needs at events defined by specific healthcare disciplines/disease areas.  These sessions allow for discussion on collaboration opportunities.
  • Scientists in the Clinic Program – Based on the successful program developed at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, this program provides a shadowing opportunity for researchers to observe the healthcare environment and the delivery of patient care. It also enables connections between scientists and clinicians to establish research partnerships.
  • TRI Research Connection Database – Clinicians interested in collaborating on current and future projects are invited to connect with TRI.  All information is held internally with the TRI Research & Clinical Translation team.
  • Research collaborators: TRI Affiliates Program – Collaborators with TRI-based researchers are eligible to apply to the Affiliate Program, which provides access to a range of benefits at TRI.

Industry with Science/Clinic

  • ACTIVATE – An ecosystem activator program, designed to accelerate innovation in the Queensland medical biotechnology sector by fostering new research collaborations between academic and clinical researchers and industry. The program matches industry with researchers. www.tri.edu.au/resources/events-hub/tri-activate
  • Industry careers day – TRI’s annual Biomedical Careers Day supports Queensland’s medical biotechnology sector by connecting industry professionals, students, and researchers with career opportunities, networking, and skill development. This free event fosters collaboration, nurtures homegrown talent, and helps retain skilled professionals in the State. Attendees gain insights into industry pathways, while companies access top talent and cutting-edge research
  • Industry Meet & Greet – Each year, TRI runs a networking event to connect industry tenants at TRI with researchers. Attend the event to find out more about what the companies are doing and opportunities to collaborate or access their services.
  • Industry: Join our biomedical network – Connect with TRI to access networking opportunities, collaborate on cutting-edge research, and participate in industry events.

Consumers with Science/Clinic

TRI runs a range of programs to help scientists and health consumers develop successful research partnerships. TRI invites consumers and community members who are interested in having an active role in the health research process to get in touch. Connecting consumers with TRI scientists will help advance world-leading research.

  • Annual Consumer EXPO – This interactive event for consumers, community members, clinicians and researchers. The expo includes training, seminars, a consumer forum and networking.

Stem students with Science/Industry

SPARQ-ed [spark-ed]

SPARQ-ed is a unique biomedical educational program for secondary school students, delivered by a collaboration between TRI and the Queensland Department of Education. Each year, more than 2000 students and teachers take part in workshops, research immersion programs or teacher professional development training.  SPARQ-ed operates a specialised teaching laboratory and learning centre at TRI as well as running a rural outreach program.

Training, upskilling and tools

Partnering with external providers, TRI-based scientists and our partners’ clinicians have access to bespoke training programs designed to fill the ‘gap’ between academia, entrepreneurism and commercialisation and enable them to leverage their research for maximum impact.

Early and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCRs)

TRI runs a program to nurture its early and mid-career researchers (EMCR). The purpose of the program is to support, train and mentor our EMCRs to increase translational capability and to promote career success. Key elements of the program include an annual Professional Development Workshop, monthly networking and information events as well as targeted grants and fellowships.

Research Communication

TRI runs an annual workshop to upskill researchers in research communication. The workshops are designed to help with communicating research to a non-scientific audience and are applicable to media, social media, seminars and grant applications.

Seminar Series

TRI delivers seminars designed to build essential knowledge and skills for the commercialisation journey. Covering key areas such as translational science, clinical trial readiness, regulatory pathways, and scale-up manufacturing, these seminars evolve to address the changing needs of the industry.
