Gnotobiotics

TRI’s Gnotobiotics Facility

A full-service research support facility with highly specialised staff.

The Gnotobiotic Facility has the capacity for Germ-free and Gnotobiotic breeding and experiments housed in flexible film isolators or positive pressure single cage isolators (more flexible for experiments with many different gnotobiotic groups).

This equipment supports the elimination or control of microbiota in preclinical models, which is a growing area of focus for research into numerous diseases.

Capabilities

  • Germ-free rederivation
  • Housing & husbandry services
  • Germ-free & gnotobiotic strains (C57Bl/6, BALB/c, CD1)
  • Supply and shipping
  • Gnotobiotic technical services
  • Assistance with experimental design, ethics applications and troubleshooting
  • Development of SOPs to convert SPF experiments for a gnotobiotic environment
  • Temporary housing of cohorts for short-term experiments on a case-by-case basis
  • Biobank of gnotobiotic/defined flora

Equipment

TRI’s Biological Research Facility (BRF) is a Tecniplast Centre of Excellence within Australia, recognising our leadership in the preclinical modelling industry. The gnotobiotics facility is located within the BRF and provides:

    • Positive pressure rack caging, “mini-isolators”, suitable for short-term experimental work
    • Aseptically prepared and handled individually ventilated caging suitable for short-term experimental work with a complex microbiome
    • Workstation for sample collection and preparation of the microbe suspensions, allowing for reduced air exposure ensuring better preservation of microbial viability and/or diversity

Training
